Fan Heaters

Fan Heaters for Fast Supplementary Heating

Fan heaters are electric heating appliances in which a heating element warms the air and a fan actively directs it into the room. Thanks to forced airflow, the sensation of warmth is immediate, making these heaters particularly suitable for short-term and supplementary heating at home, in an office or in other indoor spaces. The terms fan heater and electric space heater are often used for the same group of appliances, although models differ in heating element type, power, airflow, controls and safety features.

Compact, Portable and Wall-Mounted Fan Heaters

A small or desktop fan heater is practical for local heating near a workspace or in a smaller room. Portable models are designed for easier movement between rooms, while some units may also be intended for wall mounting. With a wall-mounted fan heater, the permitted installation location, airflow direction and required clearances must be taken into account.

Power is not the only important factor when choosing. Airflow and the design of the air outlet affect how quickly and where the heated air is distributed. If you prefer heating without an active fan, compare Convector Heaters or Oil-Filled Radiators. For more direct local heat with greater emphasis on radiation, Quartz Heaters are another option.

Fan Heater, Electric Air Heater and PTC Design

A fan heater or electric air heater combines a heating element with a fan. The heating element may be conventional, ceramic or PTC, so not every fan heater is necessarily a PTC heater. When choosing, check the actual technology used in the specific model rather than judging only by its appearance.

This is also what distinguishes the fan heater category from PTC ceramic heaters. In this category, the main common feature is the active circulation of heated air, while the PTC designation refers specifically to the type of heating element.

How to Choose the Right Fan Heater Power

Rated power should not be determined solely according to floor area. Heating requirements are also affected by ceiling height, insulation, external walls, window quality, initial room temperature and desired heating speed. For models rated at 1000 W, 1500 W or 2000 W, room size, airflow and expected operating time should therefore be considered alongside wattage.

For a smaller room or local heating, a more compact model may be sufficient, while a larger or colder room requires appropriate heating capacity. Higher power can provide more heat during operation, but it does not automatically make a heater the better choice for every room.

Thermostat, Heat Settings and Controls

A fan heater with a thermostat helps maintain the set temperature. The thermostat does not reduce the rated power of the heating element, but regulates how long it operates according to the room temperature. Some models may offer different power levels, adjustable temperature, a timer or remote control.

A timer is useful when you want to limit operating time, while remote control is especially practical for wall-mounted or less accessible units. If a model can also operate in fan-only mode, this function should be checked in the specifications of the specific product.

Noise Level, Safety and Room Suitability

The fan creates both sound and air movement during operation, so noise level is an important consideration in a bedroom, home office or any room where the appliance will operate for longer periods. Airflow direction is also important, as a direct stream of hot air toward the user may not always be comfortable.

When choosing, check overheating protection and, for freestanding models, whether a tip-over safety shut-off is included where specified. Do not cover the appliance or block the air intake or outlet. For a bathroom, garage or workshop, use only a model explicitly designed for the specific environment.

Energy Consumption and the Term “Energy-Efficient Fan Heater”

A fan heater is an electric heating appliance, so energy consumption during active heating mainly depends on the actual power and operating time. A 2000 W heater operating at full power consumes approximately 2 kWh of electricity during one hour of active heating.

A thermostat and timer can reduce the total operating time, but they do not change the appliance’s consumption while the heating element is actually operating at a given power level. When looking for an energy-efficient fan heater, correct power selection, temperature regulation, operating time and room heat loss are therefore more important.

Fan Heater Price and What to Consider Before Buying

The price of a fan heater depends on power, size, heating element type, thermostat, installation method and additional functions. Before purchasing, compare the required power for the room, airflow, noise level, heat settings, thermostat, control options and safety features. This will make it easier to choose a fan heater or electric air heater that suits the specific room and intended use.
