Convector Heaters

Convector Heaters for Supplementary Room Heating

Convector heaters are electric heating appliances designed for supplementary heating of homes, apartments, offices and other indoor spaces. In a conventional design, the heating element warms the air inside the unit; warmer air rises while cooler air enters through the lower part of the housing, creating natural air circulation. Electric convectors without a fan are also suitable for rooms where quieter operation is important.

Wall-Mounted, Floor-Standing and Portable Electric Convectors

Depending on the design, a convector heater can be freestanding, floor-standing or suitable for wall mounting. Freestanding models are easier to move between rooms, while wall-mounted installation saves floor space and is suitable when the heater will be used permanently in the same location. Before installation, observe the required distances from furniture, curtains and other objects, as well as the manufacturer’s instructions.

When choosing, check the dimensions, stability of the feet or base, power cord length and accessibility of the controls. If you prefer a slimmer solution for installation along a wall, also compare Panel Heaters. If slower heating with greater thermal inertia and quiet fanless operation is more important, Oil-Filled Radiators may be a better choice.

How to Choose the Right Convector Heater Power

Rated power should not be selected solely according to floor area. Heating requirements are also affected by ceiling height, insulation, external walls, window quality, outdoor temperature, desired indoor temperature and whether the heater will be the main or only a supplementary heat source. Models are available in different power ratings, so it is important to compare the actual needs of the room rather than simply choosing the unit with the highest wattage.

Insufficient power may result in prolonged continuous operation, while higher power alone does not guarantee lower costs or greater comfort. For a bedroom or home office, noise level is also important, while in a larger or poorly insulated room, sufficient heating capacity is a higher priority.

Thermostat, Controls and Safety

A convector heater with a thermostat helps maintain the set temperature. The thermostat generally does not reduce the rated power of the heating element, but switches the heating on and off according to the room temperature or changes between the available power levels. When comparing models, check the type of thermostat, power settings, timer and other functions where available.

Overheating protection is also important. For freestanding models, check the stability of the unit and whether tip-over protection is included. Do not cover the heater or position it in a way that blocks the air intake or outlet.

Electricity Consumption and Efficient Use

With resistive electric heating, energy consumption during active heating is directly related to the rated power of the appliance. A 2000 W heater operating at full power consumes approximately 2 kWh of electricity per hour of active heating; actual daily consumption depends on how long the thermostat keeps the heating element switched on.

For this reason, the term “energy-efficient convector heater” alone is not sufficient for comparison. Correct sizing, thermostat control, desired temperature, room heat loss and duration of use are more important factors. For local heating, it can be more practical to heat only the room you are using instead of increasing the temperature throughout the entire building.

A Convector Heater and a Fan Coil Unit Are Not the Same

An electric convector heater, or convection radiator, is a standalone electric heating appliance. A fan coil unit used in a hydronic HVAC system is an indoor terminal unit that requires connection to a hydronic heating or cooling source. Similar terminology therefore does not mean the same operating principle or the same product category.

Convector Heater Price and What to Consider Before Buying

The price of a convector heater depends on power, dimensions, installation method, controls and additional functions. Before purchasing, compare the required power for the room, thermostat type, safety features, wall-mounted or floor-standing installation options and expected duration of use. This will make it easier to choose an electric convector that suits the specific room and heating requirements.
